Project Postponed

Unfortunately we'd had our last meeting of the project group at the museum. The emergence of the Covid 19 pandemic in UK called a halt to the project plans in March and the museum closed during the national lockdown.

When restrictions eased in the summer the museum was able to re-open to the public albeit in a restricted and reduced capacity. Health guidelines rightly prevented groups mixing together and so project workshops at the museum were not able to resume.

Wanting to remain engaged with our project participants we considered ways of      re-structuring content. During the lockdown period a great emphasis on digital interaction took place across society and many good initiatives were born. However for our project ‘going digital’ was neither practical for all those involved or complementary to the projects aim. We were exploring ways of making the museum more accessible to sight impaired visitors, not contributing to a problem.

We decided that if the participants couldn’t come to the museum, we would take the project to them. Julian and costume collection manager Georgina Bradley carefully selected items that would be suitable for members to study on their own and in their homes.

The objects were individually packed in bespoke travel boxes along with contextual descriptions recorded onto audio devices by Julian and Georgina. Following necessary Covid -19 safety guidelines the travel boxes were quarantined in readiness to leave the museum.
